It felt like in the effort to not make the characters suffer, the authors also removed all of the interesting conflict from the stories, leaving them feeling a bit hollow. So much fun reading this with young children, and having them figure out which of the other stories they may have heard or read parallel the stories in the book. Shaykh Ahsan went on to study at the Islamic University of Madinah where he graduated with a BA in Shar ī ’ah in 2006. The majesty of Haiti’s foundations is reflected in the almost unreal story of King Henry Christophe.

This is a book that I think should be available to to every girl, but especially those it was written for, those who don't get to see themselves as the black princess and conquer the world with love, grace, empowerment and self worth nearly enough because not enough of our girls feel like the the strong, amazing, worthy, smart princesses that they are. The Little Mermaid: good moral about choosing to do good and be selfless even to the point of risking your life to save someone who is being a bully to you, but not at all either the Disney version or the original Hans Christian Anderson version. The folklore, culture and adornments were uniquely cultural and I could not get enough of this story telling delivered by some very talented voice artists.

The intense photography with fantastical costumes and makeup also reminded me of Natasha Tarpley's "The Me I Choose to be", and now I see that the Bethencourts did the photography for that as well. Revisit beloved classics, but with a twist, such as The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, Red Riding Hood, The Poisoned Apple, and find new favorites with stories created especially for the Anansi and the Three Trials, Aku the Sun Maker, How the Zebra Got Its Stripes, The Legend of Princess Yennenga, and John Henry, the Steel-Drivin' Man.All are accented by the wonderfully beautiful, extraordinary costuming of Black children, which personifies the Bethencourt's work.

The pair gained global recognition with their AfroArt series which showcases the beauty and versatility of afro hair to empower kids of color around the world. I do wish the Princess had had some character development or flaws though something to overcome maybe as they do become friends. The illustrations are rich and gorgeous, though there were a couple of stories that were too digitally manipulated for my tastes. Goldi, the Girl With the Golden Locs: Goldi Locks and the Three Bears retelling: this one works quite well, and is a very good story about finding contentment in life and sharing what you have, not needing materialistic possessions to be happy, etc. Shaykh Ahsan Hanif has a number of ij ā z ā t in the Qur’an, including an ijāzah in the ten qirā’āt, regularly leads tar ā wi ḥ prayers and delivers lectures in the UK and across the world. But with divided loyalties and his closest friendship shaken, can their alliance hold against overwhelming odds? As springboards for further reading and exploration, readers may wish for source notes or context on the stories’ cultures of origin as well as the inspirations for the clothing and adornment.
