In the early days of Stone Island, Massimo Osti spent a lot of time working on a material that seemed more suited to the military. It was a tarpaulin made from 90% cotton, 10% polyester gauze and treated with resin, which was then dyed giving a distinct colour on each side. Finally, it was washed with pumice stones, softening the fabric and giving a worn look. This was the birth of Tela Stella. was an important year in Osti's career. He invented and presented Rubber Flax and Rubber Wool – linen and wool with a thin, rubber coating. [4] The rubber made the materials waterproof, improved their resistance and added a totally new look and feel to the garments. In the same year Osti experimented with brushed combed wool for the first time. Today all mills use this procedure for processing woolen textiles, the same process Osti invented in 1987. Ryan, S. E. By the mid-1970s, Osti began to move away from the graphics that defined his early work and towards an aesthetic that was very personal to him. As a collector of military surplus and vintage workwear, the former graphic designer became fascinated with the stories behind second-hand clothing and the personalities of the people who wore them –– it was this ‘worn-in’ look that he wanted to recreate in his own clothing. The fact that one of his first employees was a chemist (a move that was totally unusual for a clothing brand at the time) showcases how dedicated Osti was in chasing his vision. The discovery of garment dyeing – a process where whole garments composed of different fabrics and fibers are dyed in the same bath rather than constructed using individually pre-dyed and pre-cut fabrics – where each material reacts differently to the same dye getting interesting tone-on-tone color effects and broken-in textures were exactly what Massimo Osti was looking for. This technique revolutionized the industry not only because of its unique look and feel but also as it reduced wastage by eliminating leftover fabric.Massimo Osti was born and raised in Bologna, Italy. He became a graphic designer and worked in the advertising business. His career in the fashion industry began in the early 1970s, when he designed a T-shirt collection featuring placed prints. He was the first to use new techniques like the four-color process and silkscreen which are used for producing T-shirt. Following the success of this first T-shirt collection, he accepted the offer to design a complete Men's collection and became an equity partner in the company he would name 'Chester Perry' (later renamed the 'C.P. However one big problem, aside from the cost, is shrinkage. Garment Dyeing requires high heat which can cause fabrics to lose up to 50% of their original size. As no two fabrics are the same, it is a constant process of experimentation.
