About this deal

After finishing his phenomenal work on the character of Christ in his previous book, "Gentle and Lowly," I didn't think he could so quickly produce another amazing book! Ortund's teaching recognizes who we are before a Holy God and reminds us that it is not a fast walk to arrive. You will stand in strength, and grow in Christ, and walk in joy, and bless the world no further than you know this book. Ortlund (PhD, Wheaton College) serves as senior pastor of Naperville Presbyterian Church in Naperville, Illinois.

It really is a book that should be meditated on and put down while you think and breathe in the realities of Christ and his work. This wasn't a huge theological treatise, it was a hard-hitting, easy to read but wonderfully deep nine chapters on growing deeper into Jesus. In fact, Ortlund’s theology in this volume leads in the direction of needing more emphasis on the human side. Ortlund does not confuse justification and sanctification, but he rightly sees that they are not isolated from each other. After intense media interest around its launch, Tunnels was published in almost forty countries and was a New York Times Bestseller, achieving sales of more than a million copies worldwide. The description is great but it doesn't cover the major things missing from this story in my opinion. As a graduating student, is my choice of church, career path, college, trade school, or military service a sign that I’m free to forge my own way, or am I simply bound by the standards of my parents or my culture? The BCC exists to strengthen churches, para-church organizations, and educational institutions by promoting excellence and unity in biblical counseling as a means to accomplish compassionate outreach and effective discipleship. But without the pursuit of a deeper (think closer) relationship with Jesus, these activities are incomplete.

Now, having finished this book, I am encouraged by the love of Jesus for me and am hopeful for growth in Jesus. As each chapter unfolds, youth pastors will be warmly refreshed in the presence of Christ and unsettled at some of our efforts and solutions to minister apart from him. Our spiritual growth happens when we have the right view of Jesus and our unity with him, are honest about our sin, and are resting in his saving and unconditional love. This book was much more interesting, there was a lot happening, there were many intrigues, and I feel like the characters were given more depth. Pastor and best-selling author Dane Ortlund offers words of encouragement to those seeking to grow deeper in their faith, making the case that sanctification is not accomplished by doing more or becoming better, but by going deeper into Christ himself. The author sets out to show you that “change is a matter of going deeper,” not a compilation of outward improvements, but an inner conviction that you already have everything you need in Christ. He serves as an editor for the Knowing the Bible series and the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, and is the author of several books, including Gentle and Lowly and Edwards on the Christian Life. and receive the anguish of this life as the gentle hand of God to help us rather than to punish us (chap.

It’s then, as you give up on yourself and throw your hands up in the air, that your heart is most fertile for the supernaturalizing power of the Holy Spirit” (167). I see a lot of reviewers saying the characters are not likable and that is why they give it a lower rating and I simply don't get that way of thinking. Popular opinion aside, it does not happen by doing more and becoming better; “Change is a matter of going deeper” ( Deeper, p.He serves as an editor for the Knowing the Bible series and the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, and is the author of several books, including Edwards on the Christian Life . These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. These well-meaning followers of Christ are genuinely seeking something great in their Christian journey. Further, he argues that these men found themselves “coming back in a post-conversion way to the liberating truth of the same gospel” (109). The TUNNELS series in general is probably one of the most realistic and grim YA universes out there.

It was such a comfort to me in this season and I truly probably need to be reading it on rotation every few months.Nevertheless, in my opinion, more emphasis on true mortification would have provided a helpful balance to the overall presentation. He adds, however, that we are not to remain in despair; rather, our despair is to drive us back to Jesus, who has accepted us and covered our sin. Psalm 1 says that the person who delights in God’s word and meditates on it day and night is like a “tree planted by streams of water”. e., to allegiance to Jesus] until you first try living for Christ out of your own strength and discover just how fearful and cautious and spiritually impotent you are on your own steam.
