About this deal

On the other hand, a zoom lens will have a focal range that it can access (by zooming in or out, hence its name). Prime or Zoom for Macro?

Ignore the crazy rainbow effects; these are sensor artifacts caused by taking a picture directly of the sun and exposing for the dark underside of the palm tree. Likewise the vertical smear at f/2.8 is another sensor artifact called interline transfer smear; it's not a lens defect. The lens is made up of 16 elements in 12 groups, including one aspherical lens, one Super extra-low dispersion (ED) lens and three additional ED lenses. The purpose of Fujifilm’s ED lenses is to reduce chromatic aberrations, while delivering clear colour reproduction, impressive sharpness and high contrast.

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS 1:1 Macro Sample Photos

However, the lens didn’t quite scratch the itch of the hardcore macro nerds out there as it was only a 1:2 macro lens – not the much desired 1:1 that most other brands had available.

You might be wondering, what makes this lens stand out from the Meike lens? Not much. They both perform similarly. It has relatively fast and reliable autofocus, also on the older bodies, and it is lightweight and relatively cheap. The price of this lens is a hard pill to swallow. It’s expensive compared to other medium telephoto macro lenses. Fujifilm really needs to produce its own macro-flash unit, which would compliment the lens and confirm that the firm fully supports X-series users specialising in close-up photography. Verdict

Pros:

With respect to portraiture, I'm more concerned with how the falloff is when moving from in-focus to out-of-focus areas. The XF 80mm f/2.8 does very well here although the cats eye bokeh issue in the corners can be a little distracting at times. The working distance flexibility with the XF 80mm f/2.8 is incredible though, and autofocus, particularly for normal portraiture distances, is plenty fast.

However, macro photography is a niche field and not many people decide to fully explore it. It is a specialized area of photography that involves a lot of experimentation and patience, and it also requires a good environment. Despite the X-mount being around since 2011, there are only three Fujifilm macro lenses available as of writing this article. This includes the brand new Fujifilm XF 30mm f/2.8 R LM W Macro which was just released in January 2023. When reversed, the lens hood hugs the barrel and provides good protection when it’s being transported. The weather seal Fujifilm has added around the metal mount also does a good job of preventing moisture or foreign matters creeping past. The Fuji 30mm provides a focal length which exactly matches that of a 45mm optic in a 35mm full-frame system, making it a classic normal-length prime lens. Not only is this the only Fujifilm X Mount prime to currently offer optical image stabilisation, allowing users to shoot intricate details and close-ups five stops slower than would otherwise be possible, the lens also features a floating focus system with two focus groups. Fujinon lenses are known for their image quality, and the XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR lives up to those image quality expectations. Fujinon lenses are also known for their inconsistent aperture ring tightness. Some are too tight, some are just right and some are too loose. To me, the aperture ring on the XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR is way too loose. I think it’s the loosest of all the Fujinon lenses I’ve experienced.

You would think that a feature like image stabilization is a godsend to the art of macro photography. While it can certainly improve the look of a macro photo taken under less than ideal conditions, it can actually get in the way of a professional and their crisp macro shot. While working on a tripod, I was able to slow my shutter speed right down and ensure that the light and level of detail was captured. I’ve got images of the dust on tiny objects being sharp and clear.

At 80mm you get a 122mm full-frame equivalent field of view and some might find this an odd angle. It is not your standard 85mm for portrait or 135mm. I see little fault with the focal length and could easily adapt this for a range of topics. While the lens isn’t exactly cheap, it sports a magnesium alloy shell, which keeps is resistant to weather and dust. The Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro is one of the biggest prime lenses in the X-system line-up, weighing 750g and measuring 13cm in length, understandable given the amount of glass used in its construction. As you can see in the pictures below, it complements the top-of-the-range Fujifilm X-T2 camera very well, not feeling at all front-heavy and more than matching the body in terms of its build quality.I especially love the anti-reflective coating that Zeiss adds to their glass. There’s no need for a polarizer with this lens; it’ll even out your colors, reduce glare, and increase clarity right out of the box. Like Fuji’s macro lens, this Zeiss lens also benefits from a floating focus system, which is helpful for macro photography. I added this lens to the list not because of its stellar performance, but to drive home the fact that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get into macro photography. From Fujifilm lens literature) The new FUJINON XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro is a lightweight, mid-telephoto macro lens designed to deliver the very best results from Fujifilm's unique X-Trans CMOS sensor. Capable of achieving high quality macro shots, the XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR features an optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups, including one aspherical lens, one Super ED lens and three ED lenses. As the first in the X Series interchangeable lens series to have a 1.0x magnification factor, the XF80mmF2.8 achieves high resolving power and beautiful bokeh, making it a perfect lens for capturing stunning macro images.
