About this deal

I grabbed my gore suite for the second time around on this book as I knew I was going to be needing it and the second time around I enjoyed it even more!

The park, and the ghosts inside, have other plans for opening day that involve an unexpected virus, many deaths and complete chaos. Part memoir of family to two parts brilliant excursion into folk-horror darkness and literary nooks and crannies' Roger Clarke, author of A Natural History of Ghosts What happens to Ben, Lillian, and Dr. Wexler? Do they make it through the theme park unscathed? What causes the computer system to fail? What happens when the ghosts escape? No spoilers here as you will just have to read the book! One summer, around the time I was in middle school, I spent a week at a friend’s family-farm in central Minnesota. The farmhouse was a familiar type, nestled in a copse of trees and surrounded by otherwise-treeless fields. The house was old and sprawling and had been subjected to several additions over the years, so that the interior was filled with odd nooks and corners, with shadows and strange sounds.

The format seemed a little over the place too. The chapters weren't focused on one thing and one area of the country it just jumped around. The only thing that was organized was that it went with one part being about graveyards, parks and another on hotels etc. But I think those could have also been spread out more and more organized by area like I already mentioned. OH MY GOODNESS! What a creepy, scary fun ride this book was! Blood, gore, ghosts and mayhem! I really enjoyed this book. I love amusement parks and the idea of an amusement park complete with REAL ghosts just sounded like the ride of a lifetime!

A marvellous blend of travel writing, history and grief memoir, Ghostland provides not only a seance with the author's lost family, but also a premonition of his dazzling literary future' Paul Willetts, author of Members Only, filmed as The Look of Love The book is a trove of wonderful, unexpected facts, especially in the footnotes. These range from the irreverent and funny to insightful, for example the one about the Overlook Hotel (i.e. the hotel in The Shining); overlook being an archaic term for the Evil Eye. The footnotes are also useful for drawing the connections between many of the different works and authors under discussion, often in erudite and wholly unexpected ways.

This is a wild ride and so so good. I have not read a book in this genre that was this good, in so long!!! What a refreshing surprise! I highly recommend this book for lovers of a good, old fashioned, straight up horror story!!! Ghostland by Duncan Ralston is as close to Scooby Doo on an acid trip as you're likely to find. It's also a prime example of what indie authors should aspire to do--not just tell a good story, but do it in a completely innovative way. People are dying to get in. My father the king has told me who you are,' said the young prince indignantly. 'You deceived me last time, but not again. Now I know that those are not real islands and real princesses, because you are a magician.' Once upon a time there was a young prince who believed in all things but three. He did not believe in princesses, he did not believe in islands, he did not believe in God. His father, the king, told him that such things did not exist. As there were no princesses or islands in his father's domains, and no sign of God, the young prince believed his father. What follows is the story of that crazy day when Ben, Lil, and her therapist Allison do go to the new absent park and all the insanity and murder that ensues. I think this book was mismarketed. It was way more academic than I was expecting and didn't supply many ghost stories that it didn't immediately disprove. In the middle section, the themes seems to get away from the author, as though he was trying to talk about too many things at once. There are many references to literature in here, which is great, but he spoiled twists to a few of those works, which is not so great. Overall I liked this and am glad I own it. I'd definitely be interested in reading more from this author in the future!

Fast forward to four years later when Rex is currently ostracized by everyone including his former best friend Lil (Lillian is what she prefers to be called now). Ghostland's grand opening its coming and Ben is determined to go to it with Lil in tow. At its core, the mystery of how this place came to be, and the reason for relocating these spirits to be put on display, are the concepts our teenaged main characters must come to terms with. The thought, time and Ben and Lilan each have their own reasons for visiting Ghostland on opening day. The fact that they've barely spoken over the last 4 years and Lilian's therapist joining them puts an awkward start to their day.
