About this deal

Yehuda Glantz, Jewish-Latin musician, frequently performs with a charango. On the live album Granite he informs his audience that he plays a charango from his native Argentina. Candaleria, Cordelia (2004). Encyclopedia of Latino Popular Culture, Volume I. Westport: Greenwood Publishing Group. p.427. Your Connection to traditional and contemporary World Music, including folk, roots, global music, ethno and crosscultural fusions The charango was primarily played in traditional Andean music. A charango player is called a charanguista. The charango has a rich, politically-charged history. The basic construction, devised by Quechua and Aymara peoples some time in the 18th century, combines features of the vihuela (grandfather of the Spanish guitar) with design ideas from their own indigenous cultures – such as using an armadillo shell for the instrument’s body. Most have a mandolin-like scale length of around 37cm (=60% of a Strat), allowing for wide positional combinations impossible on larger fretboards ( n.b. to mimic this on a normal-scale guitar, capo at 10fr ).

According to Eduardo Carrasco of Quilapayún, in the first week after the 1973 Chilean coup d'etat, the military organized a meeting with folk musicians where it was explained that the traditional instruments charango and quena were now banned. [12] Etymology [ edit ] Charango in the Horniman museum, London, UK. Moquegua: Charango with 20 strings arranged in five courses of four strings each. Tuning is like the standard charango with the third (central) course using octave doublings. [25] [27] I maintained my interest in folk music and Latin music, learning some Flamenco guitar and playing in an Irish folk band. Some of the South American guitar techniques and rasguedo I learned from Pablo were really helpful when it came to learning Flamenco right hand techniques. I’m very grateful that I learned some rasguedo before studying classical guitar as I’m sure that learning after strict classical training may have proved more difficult. The charango is more than just a musical instrument; it’s a conduit for the rich, harmonic melodies that capture the spirit of the Andean region. Its sound is as distinct as its history, imbuing traditional Andean music with a unique tonal quality that sets it apart from other stringed instruments. The final theory claims that when the Spaniards colonizers prohibited the natives from playing their ancestral music, the charango was an attempt to create a lute that could easily be hidden under the native’s garments. The Origin of the Term Charango The charango comes in different sizes, shapes, pitch, type of strings, and tuning. In more recent times, there have been numerous modern adaptions to its construction.

The charango, a symbol of Andean music, has been played by many talented musicians throughout history, known as charanguistas. These individuals have not only contributed to the development of traditional Andean music but have also introduced the unique sound of the charango to other genres and audiences. The introduction of the charango in Potosi was as a result of migration within the Quechua populations, through cultural interaction it eventually spread to the larger Andean area. This theory is yet to be proven, however.
