About this deal

But the framing Kusama and Cody tried to offer the movie — as something that sought to be fun but was also harder and more complex than that — was by and large pushed aside. Many critics watched Jennifer’s Body explicitly as a horror sex romp for straight men, and they found themselves profoundly confused. Review- Diablo Cody's "Body" ". Mystery Man On Film. March 5, 2008. Archived from the original on March 8, 2008 . Retrieved April 9, 2008. Nearly 10 years after the feminist horror comedy Jennifer’s Body premiered, flopped, and was declared dead on arrival, it’s beginning to live again. It may have gotten a 44 percent on Rotten Tomatoes when it came out — and, even worse, a 34 percent audience rating — but the narrative is shifting: The internet is suddenly full of critics reclaiming the movie and naming it a forgotten feminist classic. Jennifer’s Body is good now. Evans, Ian; Lambert, Christine (2009), TIFF 2009: Jennifer's Body premiere photos, archived from the original on June 8, 2011 , retrieved November 27, 2009 Colangelo, B. Music was incorporated as an essential part of the film; there are "very specific bands" placed in band posters in some parts, such as in the selection of the band poster on the walls of the bar. [14] Kusama said "[t]he music was a huge component of the movie" and this is first evident with "the songs that we see and hear performed, but then, just the vibe of the movie actually". She said, "As the movie progresses, it becomes a pretty clearly music-oriented movie. It's sort of a youth movie. Some of those bands were totally made up and some of them are not." [14] Release [ edit ] Critical response [ edit ]This movie is a commentary on girl-on-girl hatred, sexuality, the death of innocence, and also politics in the way the town responds to the tragedies [of the bloody deaths of several young men]. Any person who dares to respond in an unconventional way is branded a traitor,” said Cody. “It’s also just about fun — I wanted to write a really entertaining popcorn movie.” Frazier, Adam (December 15, 2007). "The life, death, and rebirth of Jennifer's Body, according to screenwriter Diablo Cody". Vox. Archived from the original on May 3, 2019 . Retrieved August 6, 2019. Jennifer's Body belongs in the third and final category: films which could and should have been hits, but for some reason failed to resonate. Like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the film contains at least one bankable star with mainstream hits behind them (Michael Cera and Megan Fox respectively), and a screenwriter or director with critical and commercial acclaim (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz with Edgar Wright, Juno with Diablo Cody). Working with Cody again following their collaborative efforts on Juno, Jason Reitman stated he and his producers "want to make unusual films". [2] Cody said she wanted the film to speak to female empowerment and explore the complex relationships between best friends. [3] As a tie-in to the film, Boom! Studios produced a Jennifer's Body graphic novel, released in August 2009.

(subscription required)Jennifer's Body is a similar attempt to create a horror film (or in this case a horror-comedy) primary driven by and about women. While both films are written by women (Moira Buffini and Diablo Cody respectively), this one also has a female director in the shape of Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux). Ultimately it's neither scary nor funny enough to match the standards of the best horror-comedies, but it's an interesting little film worthy of its cult status which deserved to do better at the box office.

At some point over the last 10 years, people began rediscovering Jennifer's Body via DVD/Blu-Ray and streaming services. And the narrative surrounding the film slowly started to shift; it's now being touted as an iconic feminist horror cult classic. (Fox also starred in the 2010 critical and box office failure, Jonah Hex, based on the DC Comics antihero, which did not experience the same redemptive arc—probably because it is a genuinely bad movie.) The novel features less of Jennifer than the film, but does capture her "going in for the kill" several times. It focuses heavily on following her soon-to-be victims and provides information on their personalities not elaborated on in the film so that readers can better conclude whether the boys deserved to be murdered. The novel consists of four chapters, with a prologue and an epilogue, with art provided for each by different artists. Each one follows a different boy and what is happening in his life just before Jennifer kills him. [72] Jennifer's Body was labelled a "spectacular disaster, the kind of thing a cat might bury in a litter box and still keep building the covering [over] because the stench can't be smothered", and a "lurid adolescent distraction". One reviewer claimed that "Jennifer's Body is not funny, nor is it sexy (the girls keep their clothes on), nor is it scary (it's all just special effects)." Even Roger Ebert, who ultimately gave the movie three out of four stars, saying that "as a movie about a flesh-eating cheerleader, it's better than it has to be", opened his review calling Jennifer's Body "a Twilight for boys".LexiB (September 21, 2009). "Jennifer's Body D.O.A in Weekend Box Office". LexiB. Archived from the original on May 15, 2011 . Retrieved September 25, 2009. The honest truth is Jennifer’s Body is not really a sexy movie in the way that it was advertised. It’s much weirder and much more unsettling than that. The next day, Jennifer seems like her usual selfish, callous self. But soon high school boys start showing up ripped to shreds and partially devoured. Jennifer has become a succubus who must consume human flesh to feed the demon within, thanks to a Satanic ritual gone wrong. (Low Shoulder needed to sacrifice a virgin in exchange for fame and fortune, and, well, Jennifer hasn't been a virgin since junior high.) Needy must face the fact that her best friend is a monster, and it's up to her to take Jennifer down before she chows down on more boys—like Needy's own boyfriend, Chip (Johnny Simmons). In a 2022 essay on its status as a classic queer and bisexual film, Carmen Maria Machado wrote that Jennifer's Body speaks to "what it means to experience parallel sexualities with your best friend as you punch through the last vestiges of childhood." Machado rejects accusations that the film is guilty of queerbaiting, considering it instead an effective depiction of the "central body of water that is bisexuality" which many queer people spend at least some of their life in. Patience and time

The men here — including a post- The OC Adam Brody and a pre- Parks and Recreation Chris Pratt — are mostly just bodies to be disposed of and are either entirely unthreatening or simultaneously threatening and pathetic. Jennifer’s seductions/murders are too campy to read as really sexy, and the much-hyped kiss between Jennifer and Needy is less steamy girl-on-girl action served to the male gaze on a platter than it is an awkward, confused act of manipulation between two girls bound together equally by affection and ego-driven codependence. Before we started shooting, it involved the full appliance attached to [Fox's] face and then her real jaw would be greened essentially inside of her mouth and then the appliance would drop below her real jaw and then visual effects essentially owned everything in her mouth and everything outside would've been a special effects appliance. And then there would've been a lot of clean up as well because of the way it attached to her face. If critics in 2009 had seen a horror film in which a boy is holding a girl's hand at a concert looking at her longingly only moments before she gets turned into a demon and he has to save her, they would have pointed out the romantic tone of the scene. But with two girls, they become mere friends and yet their intimacy is also considered sexual, pandering to a male audience.
