About this deal

By killing off literally every adult and turning them into zombies, this game is clearly aimed at a younger audience. Seriously, every protagonist is 15 years old. It looks a little cutesy but there’s actually quite a bit of game to be had here. What We Liked: In Dark Darker Darkest, the players are on the offensive. It’s a nice change of pace for zombie-themed board games. There’s a collaboration mechanism that gives the game an interesting dynamic. What Could Be Better: That’s basically it. You’ll always roll three dice and when something is scored, you get to pull another die out of the pool. The dice come in 3 colors: green, yellow, and red. Greens have the best odds for rolling brains and reds have the worst.

It’ll be some kind of thematic element injected in the middle of the turn. They are always stressful but they add so much thematic flavor to the game. What We Liked: Zombie video games usually miss the point of zombie fiction. The point isn't the brightness of human nature in a crisis, but the darkness. City of Horror, then, offers its three to six players the best zombie game since DayZ. City of Horror sees everyone trying to shepherd a personal handful of survivors - your people - through just four hours in a 28 Days Later-type zombie apocalypse. And you're going to make a terrible, disgusting, amoral mess of it, because this isn't Left 4 Dead. City of Horror has no safe rooms, no heroes and no hope. It does have a couple of guns... but you won't be using them on the zombies. Tiny Epic Zombies has probably one of the coolest-looking meeples I’ve ever seen. Now you might be thinking, “How do you make a meeple cool?”. The obvious answer is: give it a chainsaw.I really enjoy the Tiny Epic series. They are all, as you might guess, tiny games with epic themes and gameplay. Each one draws from a different set of mechanics and plays quite differently.

City of Zombies is a one- to six-player, cooperative, dice-rolling game by ThinkNoodle Games that challenges players to use math to stop an advancing zombie hoard. We also got a copy of the expansion Times Square. Initial Impressions They both have almost identical themes. Find stuff in a zombie apocalypse and escape before the timer runs out. The time limit is even the same for both games at 15 minutes. Anyhoo… The Walking Dead has numerous board games and spin-offs to choose from but I wanted to showcase this one in particular. The Walking Dead: All Out War is a miniatures skirmish game. So, if the zombie value is a three, you’ll draw zombie cards until the zombie value matches the location. Basically the higher the number, the more zombies. The zombie apocalypse. One of the most reusable themes in videogames and movies. Often, brought on by a rapidly infectious disease that can’t be contained. The plausibility of such a scenario is part of the reason zombie games are so popular to play on the web. There are hundreds of free zombie games to play that help you experience this terrifying scenario in real-time. Play the best zombie games online Zpocalypse is a fun mix of strategic decisions, campy scenarios, pre-combat strategy, and of course, hordes of zombies. It’s also cool that you can play this game cooperatively or competitively. What Could Be Better: Zpocalypse 2: Defend the Burbs, the sequel to Zpocalypse, is an interesting amalgamation of things.

In Dead of Winter, you take on the role of a character in a motley crew of survivors. You could be anything from an urban ninja, a drunken Santa Claus, or even a dog. It gets a little weird sometimes but it’s all in good fun. Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game has great character variety to keep the survival of the fittest interesting. Players are faced with multiple different threats like zombies, the weather, and even hidden traitors. It keeps tensions high so you’re engaged all the whole game. What Could Be Better: It’s a very simple game that’s perfect as a starter before a larger game or when you’re bored and have a few minutes to kill. Zombie Dice usually had a permanent spot near the gaming table. Whenever I’m waiting around or have some time to kill we would play it. It’s great to pull out and play for 15 minutes then be on your way. In All out War, each player controls a group of survivors from the comics/TV show. Each character has their own stat sheet and can equip weapons. Over the course of a round, players compete for resources and generally get in each other’s way.

Did you ever play the tower defense custom games from Warcraft/Starcraft? That’s kind of what Zpocalypse 2 is like. It’s a mashup of tower defense games and RPGs. Sometimes during an encounter, you’ll get a small token depending upon your actions during an event. Don’t bother trying to figure out what they do. The game will tell you when it’s time. One of the interesting things about Last Night on Earth is that it’s played in teams. Zombies vs. Humans. Depending upon the scenario, the humans will have various objectives and the zombies will, of course, be trying to eat some brains.

The rulebooks can be intimidating but there’s so much zombie goodness in this box that I highly urge you to give it a try. What We Liked: Both of them are extremely tense with the time limit really putting on the pressure. What We Liked: Zpocalypse is the first game developed by Greenbrier Games and it’s really cool. Players form squads of survivors that emerge from their fallout shelters and try to make their way into the new apocalyptic wasteland (full of zombies, of course). What I like most about Zpocalypse 2 are the game components. Not only is everything durable and solid but they’re very cool-looking and functional. The player boards themselves look amazing. You can build military units to remove zombies from the board but they’re expensive and military units are removed at a 1:1 rate. It’s a losing strategy and a delaying tactic at best.

But this game's not done. Your dwindling options and your desperate dialogues are drawn out by a final pit-stop. Every survivor card is actually double-sided, and you can flip it - once - to use that character's power. The kid can hide. The burglar can break into a building that's full. The pregnant woman gives birth, giving her two votes. But if you do use these, those survivors are worth fewer points at the end of the game. If you get a bum hand of elderly survivors, it just means more points if you can get them through the night. Also, nobody suspects gramps has a holdout pistol. It’s not all about slaughtering zombies either. Players have a series of objectives that they’ll need to complete to win the game, and the base game comes with tons of scenarios. As a game, it's partly so emotive and exciting because of the binary nature of success. There is no slow amassing of points, no chipping away at some greater task. There's just one of your guys getting eaten, or you giggling outrageously as someone else gets eaten. Every second of every turn, there's only one question: "ARE YOUR BALLS IN A FIRE Y/N". If they are, you're terrified. If they're not, you're laughing.
