At 24 he became the head chef and partner at Harvey’s with a kitchen staff including a young Gordon Ramsay, who he allegedly made cry. The descent through the kitchen is straightforward at first, however the path then becomes less obvious as you navigate the boulder field. The route is quite steep in parts, requiring a little boulder hopping and some easy level scrambling (or perhaps a little bum shimmying!)

I had never met him because [the idea for the movie] all started with Ridley Scott, not with Russell. I did like how frank he was about not being good with girls, lol. I liked the frankness of his social awkwardness - sometimes all the memoirs lean to them being sex gods somehow.He recalls how he first saw the Australian in an in-flight movie: "I didn't know Russell then”, he says. indeed, after a point, they become dirge-like in their predictability. Why, I asked myself midway through this book—right around the time that my discomfort at White's antics gave way to boredom—would readers, much less diners, want to be in the company of such a gregariously antisocial character? As is the case with virtually any autobiography, the answer is that we are seeking a window into the subject's soul, no matter how, well, unsavory that subject might be. His book, unfortunately, provides no such insights, offering readers little more than a continual, atonal concerto of scuffles with customers and insults to co-workers. Please, I wanted to say to White as I was reading, stifle all that alpha male stuff and just cook. (May) He explained: "When they do a movie on your life, you don't just have one Marco - I am nearly 60 years old." Like most chef memoirs, it is more a collection of essays than a coherent narrative of life. I can see how he gained a reputation - cooking was his obsession and it seemed like he had very little balance at all in his life. Combined with losing his mother early and a disciplinary dad, it also makes sense how he'd have an explosive temper and issues with treating people unwell.

I liked this book. . .it was unpretentious, well-crafted and interesting. If this sounds like I'm damning it with faint praise I kinda am. . .
