HDR-compatible for extended picture contrast and brightness with compatible 4K TVs and HDR-encoded content The 4K pass through did not disappoint. Sony says that their pass through hardware allows for visual data to pass through the receiver without compromising the visual integrity of your display. The result is 4K quality video that actually look like 4K quality video. The STR-DH590 is also HDCP 2.2 compatible, which means that you shouldn’t have any trouble streaming any 4K or HDR content. You will be sure to note a leap in terms of shadow definition and highlights, making the visual experience more appealing and immersive. This Sony Surround Sound receiver easily outshines its alternatives due to its overall HDR functioning and diverse compatibility. 3. Speaker Set-up One notable feature of the Sony STR-DH590 is the S-Force Pro Front Surround technology, which simulates surround sound with just two front speakers. While it’s not as good as a true surround sound setup, it does provide a wider soundstage and enhances the overall listening experience. This Sony receiver has Bluetooth on-board, but no networking or internet access. (Image credit: Sony)

Sony STRDH590 5.2 multi-channel 4k HDR AV Receiver Review

If you are still doubtful about going for the STR-DH590, let us quell any lingering concerns by stating it loud and clear: you won’t find a more complete, better alternative to the Sony STR-DH590 receiver at the attractive price it offers. Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed this little receiver. I love the way it looks, I love the way it sounds…it just sings to me. My only question is….why is the Sony STR-DH590 so cheap? The Basics Setting up the Sony STR-DH590 is a breeze thanks to Sony’s DCAC automatic setup feature. The remote has an intuitive layout that makes controlling your audio experience simple.

Home theater sound meets easy wireless music streaming

As for music, again the results were very strong so long as I remained within the capabilities of the receiver and used speakers suited to it. And switched the sound of stereo music to ‘Stereo’ or ‘Direct’ or to ‘Pure Direct’, rather than the silly ‘All Channel Stereo’ default. The STR-DH590 provides 5.2 multi-channel surround sound with 145 watts per channel. Because of the additional sub-woofer output provided by the 5.2 system, the richness of the audio is enhanced with double the rumble. 5.2 channel sound provides, in general, a more cinematic experience than that of a 5.1 channel system. The five speaker setup is the same, but the ability to integrate an extra sub-woofer creates that deep rumble that only theatrical speakers can provide. Complete with signal handling, multiple ports and inputs, and a host of other advanced features, this is one of the most attractive options in its category out there. A simple, value-oriented piece of technology that comes with the supremely convenient feature of Bluetooth connectivity, this is arguably Sony’s best middle-range option for surround sound receivers. The STR-DH590 is a 5.1 channel receiver (it has two subwoofer outputs but handles them independently), with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding and on-board DSD decoding. The manufacturer promises 145 watts of power at 6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9 percent THD, driving one channel. This is because everything in the immediate setting of the speaker system affects how it sounds, right from the walls, the material used for construction, how crowded the room is, along its dimensions. When you start up the receiver it presents a kind of basic user menu across the screen of your TV. This can overlay whatever video signal is being throughput, even UHD HDR BT.2020 stuff, and it can be invoked at any time with the ‘Home’ key. The four options are ‘Watch’, which lets you choose one of the four HDMI inputs, ‘Listen’, which lets you choose from Bluetooth, the FM tuner (there is no AM tuner) and SA/CD analogue or digital, ‘Easy Setup’ which invokes a settings wizard, the inappropriately-named ‘Sound Effect’, and ‘Speaker Settings’ which allows manual adjustments to speaker settings. For music, the DH590 offers direct 2-channel stereo and multi-channel sound modes, as well as DPL II Music, Enhancer (to improve lower quality files) modes, and modes such as Hall, Jazz, and more. The testing was performed in a living room where diffuser acoustic panels were mounted on the walls and sound-absorbing ceiling panels hung from the ceiling, thus ensuring proper acoustics. Controlling the acoustics of the room is essential to reach optimum sound. Absorption panels with diffuser-Two in one product performs two functions at the same time, as it ensures the absorption of deep sounds and the proper sound dispersion in space.

Excellent. This Sony STR-DH590 5.1 receiver meets all my expectations. I replaced a Yamaha RX-V379 that started having problems, no longer giving subwoofer outputs. This Sony, despite having a cheap price works very well with my Polk Audio speakers. The sound of the Sony DH590 amplifier may seem a little too rough and brittle to some, so if you like the soft, warmer sound, this device may not be for you. The DH590 also performed well with stationary speakers, but perhaps even better when used with bookshelf speakers and subwoofers in a smaller room. The measurement starts after 5 seconds. The measurement process takes approximately 30 seconds. A test tone is output from each speaker in sequence including the sub in you correctly selected a speaker pattern that includes one. When the measurement is complete, a beep sounds.

Product highlights:

There is something about the STR-DH590 that feels very complete. It is abundantly clear that Sony put a lot of time and effort into making this receiver an extremely versatile device. The STR-DH590’s combination of value and feature strength make Sony’s AVR one of the most desirable and practical pieces of audio equipment on the market. With a combination of 5.2 multi-channel surround sound, 2.1 channel S-Force Pro virtual surround sound, 4K and HDR pass through, Bluetooth connectivity, auto calibration and ample port real estate, the STR-DH590 is the best choice for the everyman. Sony has abandoned the networking features built into many more expensive AV receivers than this model – and thus offers the device at a much better price. So don’t expect extra features like AirPlay, Chromecast, and DTS Play-Fi, or features like Spotify, Pandora, TIDAL, and TuneIn. It only has a Bluetooth 4.2 connection. It lets go of the chase for complexity and looking sophisticated in favor of the simplicity of appearance and operation. Warranty
