The C815 features both the major dynamic metadata HDR formats Dolby Vision and HDR10+ as well as normal HDR10 content. There is also an Onkyo 2.1 soundbar at the bottom of the screen and the TCL supports Dolby Atmos decoding with ARC support via HDMI 1 and the C815 also supports DTS audio. TCL might not quite carry the same household name as the likes of Samsung, LG, Panasonic, or Sony in western markets, but the Chinese company remains the number two TV manufacturer in the world when it comes to market share – and is continuing to expand into Europe and the US as it aspires to that number one spot. This year’s line-up looks to build nicely upon what’s gone before it, offering a wealth of potentially good-looking upgrades across the board. One that won’t be made familiar to everyone, the RC630K is a UK-exclusive QLED running Roku TV that is likely to be available from September (or shortly thereafter). It has many of the same features as the C635, including HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, along with the Onkyo sound system, albeit using Dolby Audio rather than Atmos, but there are a few other notable differences. All of the new TVs support at least HDR10 and HLG, with further additions as you rise up the price list.

Manufacturer At the time of writing, the larger 75 and 85-inch models were not in the pipeline for the UK market but watch this space! Size / Model (UK)The ‘Film’ image mode is also excellently calibrated. The gray scale has a little bit of red in excess, but that is hardly visible in practice. The color rendering is excellent. Considering the improvements in terms of contrast and dimming, these are very strong performances. The 65C835 will be ‘Calman Ready’ later this year so it can be calibrated automatically. For those of the alternate voice service persuasion, the C835 can also be connected to Alexa smart devices. Impressively, the 65C815K supports both of the so-called active high dynamic range (HDR) formats: HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Most rival TVs support only one or other of these formats, or neither of them – and, as we’ll see, this dual active HDR support is especially important to the 65C815K’s performance.

The LG QNED wasn’t worth the price. I wasn’t impressed with it overall, it had a horrible awkward stand attached to it, blotchy local dimming, and also came with coil whine too.I should stress that these colour issues only crop up with bright HDR10 scenes/image areas. Dark HDR10 shots and scenes look pretty normal where colours are concerned – although, ultimately, this just makes the excesses with bright scenes all the more glaring. Without the scene-by-scene picture date of Dolby Vision and HDR10+ to guide it, however, the 65C815K’s presets rather lose the plot. Saturations with the industry standard HDR10 sources that actually make up the majority of HDR content are pushed way too far, losing subtle shading and detail in the process. As a result, bright pictures can end up resembling weird hand-painted caricatures rather than natural video. The color range of the quantum dots is equally impressive. The C835 achieves 93% P3 and 70% REc.2020. This equals the performance of an OLED, but combines it with a lot more brightness. Colors and light are therefore the strong side of this device, the images have an enormous intensity.

Running in its brightest, most dynamic mode, colours in bright HDR10 scenes can look distractingly gaudy and unnatural As with several of the other manufacturers we’ve featured this year, there’s a clear progression in terms of both pricing and the ever-improving features list as you work your way from the cheapest TVs to the most expensive. This means you should be free to figure out your best option either by setting a budget and seeing what fits your limit, or by determining what features and specifications you need for your own viewing preferences and line-up your choices accordingly. The 65C815K exhibits mixed fortunes with its contrast. Watching it in a dark room using its out-of-the-box presets, three contrast points immediately stood out: two good, one bad. While TV designs typically seem keen to crow about keeping speakers hidden away as if they’re some sort of dirty secret, personally I have no problem with the TCL’s public display of sound-quality affection. As you can guess, the first two digits relate to the screen size, with the P reflecting the LCD product line (you’ll note it changes to C for the QLED and Mini LED models). Rather than using a letter to reflect the yearly updates like many of its competitors, TCL increases the Series number, so last year’s P62 and C82 ranges, for example, become P63 and C83 in 2022. This is the followed with a further digit cementing each model’s place in the Series (the P638 ranked above the P635 and RP630), and the last letter denoting the region (with K being the UK).The intense colours are at their best with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ sources. The extra scene-by-scene picture information these two formats provide appears to help the set rein in its most aggressive colour instincts to deliver punchy but also mostly believable and balanced tones. So much so that pictures actually look much more dynamic and bold than the good (for this price level) peak measured brightness of around 540 nits would lead you to expect. Equally Bezel Less and also slightly slimmer than the norm at 30mm, the C835 is another impressive contender that gives you some serious value-for-money considerations. At the time of writing, the 75-inch model wasn’t lined up for a UK release, but we’ll keep you posted if anything changes. Size / Model (UK) Some high-end (AKA more expensive) mini LED rivals provide far more dimming zones than that, it has to be said. Experience suggests, though, that it's not always how many zones you've got that counts, but what you do with them. Also, some mini LED rivals, such as the Samsung QN85A and LG's QNED ranges, use IPS LCD panels that typically deliver weaker contrast than VA designs. For smart features and the main UI, TCL has turned to Android TV. The 65C825K currently runs Android 9.0, but will shift to 11.0 later in the year. European versions of the TV are already on to the Android 11.0 OS, and will upgrade to Google TV, but apparently that's not possible on this UK version due to localisation issues. the TCL manages to convey HDR content in a balanced manner with decent colour accuracy, skin tones and some shadow detail
