About this deal

This latest iteration of Callaway’s flagship ball is a three-piece construction as opposed to the four-piece of previous models. This may sound like a regression but, owing to the new materials and improved construction methodology, Callaway assures us that it’s anything but. A new Hyper Elastic SoftFast Core has been engineered to deliver more distance and forgiveness without sacrificing on the soft feel that has made the Chrome Soft a ‘go to’ for so many golfers. Callaway told us that their latest duo is designed to be as premium as humanly possible, i.e. these babies are built for performance, just like a Ferrari, and, on top of that, they come loaded with the company's latest technologies and innovations. All these features make the new Chrome Soft the flagship ball offering in Callaway's 2020 portfolio, as they're crafted to be more consistent and longer than ever before. The new Chrome Soft X is the modern Tour Ball, and we’ve reengineered every aspect of the design to deliver maximum distance for the elite player. What I can say is that manufacturers are working to quantify this in absolute terms along the lines of “If a core is x mm off-center, it can be expected to fly x-yards offline at 150 MPH speed”…something like that anyway. In July 2023, Neil became just the 9th editor in Golf Monthly's 112-year history. Originally working with the best coaches in the UK to produce instruction content, he has also presented many Golf Monthly videos looking at all areas of the game from Tour player interviews to the rules of golf.

Of the three models, the Chrome Soft is the one that has undergone the biggest under-the-hood changes. Compared to Chrome Soft 20, the Chrome Soft 22 is longer through the bag while retaining its signature soft feel. For Callaway, however, the number of staffers playing the retail ball has invariably been closer to 0 than 100%. Phil, Xander, Sergio. Nope, nope, nope. The key element in play is that, unlike Chrome Soft where Callaway’s stated goal was to maintain compression, with Chrome Soft X, they’ve deliberately made the ball firmer. It’s firmer enough that having “soft” in the name is probably a misnomer, though Chrome Firm doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. Bridgestone would argue that this is exactly what it did when it launched the RX line, but there’s no disputing the fact that Callaway’s take on the soft tour ball is the one that resonated with golfers in a way that no other previous soft offering had. Brands like it when their tour staff play the same ball you and I can buy at retail. It adds validation, credibility…that sort of thing. Before Left Dash hit the market, about 80% of Titleist staffers were playing one of the two retail flavors of Pro V1 balls. Bridgestone and Srixon both claim that 100% of their guys play the retail model – no secret items on either company’s menu. TaylorMade? A story for another day. It is notable that we found cores in two distinct colors (dark and light gray). Typically, we would expect cores of the same model to be the same color. That said, we found no quantifiable differences between the two colors in our measurements. Cover

component or part thereof that is defective or becomes defective during normal use within two years While we found some measure of off-center cores in just over 20 percent of our samples, only one was significantly off-center to the degree that it would likely have performance implications. Improvements to Callaway’s painting and finishing processes will ensure an even coating and uncompromised aerodynamic performance. Golfers love Chrome Soft. That is not in dispute. It’s also true that Callaway has some work to do if it’s serious about making the best, highest-quality ball in golf. Your affections aside, objectively, Chrome Soft has never been a good golf ball. Nobody making a soft ball has been transparent enough about the performance implications for mid- to high-swing golfers and Callaway’s quality control issues were such that, even if you didn’t notice, it may have cost you some strokes. On our gauge, the Callaway Chrome Soft has an average compression of 72 (4-points softer than the 2020 model). It’s soft by urethane covered standards, and, real talk, people, the only ball in the Chrome Soft lineup that’s soft by any standard. As many 2-piece balls are softer still, relative to the market as a whole, it qualifies as medium firmness. Diameter and Weight
