About this deal

I know there are some rotten apples out there, but take it from me, this old world of ours, flawed as it may be, is a much better place than you have been told.” Both her children had passed her by. Her daughter, Janice, had known more about sex at fifteen than Evelyn did at this very minute. Something had gone wrong. The story is set in two different time periods. In the present, Evelyn Couch, a depressed Alabama housewife played by Kathy Bates, becomes friends with the vibrant, eightysomething Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy). They meet during Evelyn’s visits to her husband’s hostile aunt at the assisted living facility where Ninny lives (temporarily, Ninny tells Evelyn). Ninny starts talking to Evelyn about her memories of Whistle Stop, Alabama — a smidge of a town that existed only because the trains stopped there. At first, Evelyn is a reluctant audience, indulging Ninny only out of the Southern politeness that generally imprisons her. But she soon becomes enthralled, and then she becomes inspired — and changes her life.

Against this bleak landscape, where I felt my best hope was not to be horrified, Fried Green Tomatoes felt like a perfect movie to me. Eva Bates is a woman you might call sexually liberated before her time. What role does she play in Idgie’s life? In Stump’s? What are Ruth’s feelings toward Eva?Mrs. Threadgoode tells Evelyn stories from a not-so-distant past, when racism was rampart and certain home values were taken utterly seriously. She tells of larger-than-life Idgie, sweet and gentle Ruth, and of course a whole cast of truly unforgettable characters. You never know what's in a person's heart until they're tested, do you?Her stories give Evelyn a new outlook on life - suddenly, she's not the mousy, dissatisfied middle-aged wife - she's got spunk. She's got character. And she'd be damned if she let one more person walk all over her. Face it girls. I'm older and I have more insurance. Gah. It's one of those books that just sweeps you off your feet and holds a special place in your heart forever. It's fluffy, but the kind of fluff that has you squealing with happiness and chasing someone down to let them know how great this book is. Fried Green Tomatoes felt like the answer to a wish. I saw it four times in the theater, something I haven’t done since. My girlfriend at the time got freaked out about my love of it — so was I, frankly! I was 22, and had been out since my first year of college. I was embarking on my post-college life, which felt full of possibility. Yet even in my happy state, Fried Green Tomatoes made me feel a yearning that I had never felt before.

Crazy, wayward, boozy Idgie was another fascinating character – her love for Ruth was absolute. Her path was no easier than Evelyn’s. But she was equally lovable. I would have liked to have sat down and had a pint of best bitter with Idgie, it’d be a riot: Eakin, Marah; Teti, John; Adams, Erik (June 16, 2014). I just cannot put any spoilers in here. There are two magical parts with the "bee charmer" and the ripped out section from the Book of Ruth (which is mailed) “…whither thou goest, I will go….”

How does this story explore the process of aging? How do we die with dignity when all those we loved and who loved us are gone? How does Ninny manage? Heiman, Andrea (April 13, 1992). I love how she gives the reader a look at a particular situation from various angles: through time, through other eyes, so that you get a complete picture of how things play out. I just loved getting to see how Buddy's life turned out and to get caught up with the other characters from the first book. I had the same issues with the "follow up" to Ya Ya Sisterhood--simple facts like names and dates were just wrong. I get that you are millionaires, set for life and have to literally do nothing for the rest of your life so...maybe, while rolling around in your money, you could...read your first book? Edit? Pay someone to edit? Write stuff down if your memory isn't that good?
