About this deal

Malala Yuousafzai is probably one of the most iconic young people of our time. Her courage and determination to make a difference provide an outstanding example of the potential that every single one of us holds within us, to make positive changes to our world. Karen also recalled how the girl was not keen on singing – something which features a lot in Girlguiding meetings – and how they overcame this so she could still join in. The Girls Can Do Anything gallery of inspirational women would not be complete without a portrait of this incredible young woman.

Girls Can Do Anything: An Empowering Book for Children Girls Can Do Anything: An Empowering Book for Children

I don't usually review books that I read with my children, since we get library books out every three weeks and read 3 a night 😂However this book was awesome and came at just the right time, as my 4 year old daughter has just started to say things like "girls can't do that," or "that's for boys..."Our brand purpose is at the heart of everything we do - we help all girls know they can do anything. There is no single or simple approach to this mission, but roundtable participants all agreed that education is the key for these girls, and that they need holistic support, including tuition, soft-skills development, and leadership training, so they can rise to their full potential. We shared our successes and challenges, as well as the stories of girls in our programs who have achieved things far beyond our hopes. We talked about collaborating to maximize our resources, support one another, and inspire more action for girls’ education, and we discussed the progress that has been made and the many people who are working in their own way to support girls and young women who have been left behind due to circumstances beyond their control. Malala Yuousafzai captured the attention of the world when she came to the UK for medical care following an assassination attempt in Pakistan when she was just 15 years old. This was no random shooting. Malala had been speaking out about life under Taliban rule since she was eleven years old. She wrote a blog under a pseudonym and was featured a New York Times documentary in 2010. She gave interviews and speeches in print and on television and was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize. She said: “The girl would become distressed when we sang. But with the adding of actions she became more comfortable with our campfire songs and with us singing Happy Birthday. With funding from a variety of donors, including the Estée Lauder Companies Charitable Foundation, Jerry and Thao Dodson, the Merali Foundation, Lana Condor, the RYTHM Foundation, and the Mark and Thuy Barnett Foundation, The Asia Foundation’s scholarship programs in Vietnam support girls from disadvantaged and low-income families. The girls are selected from six regions to attend secondary school through graduation, to build key life and leadership skills, and to enter university, where many pursue traditionally male-dominated STEM fields. Our education programs are distinguished by the locally grounded, personalized support we provide to each of our young scholars.

Girls Can Do Anything

Girlguiding is a UK charity for girls and young women, who believe in helping all girls know they can do anything. They offer Rainbows for 4-7 year olds, Brownies for 7-10 year olds, Guides for 10-14 year olds and Rangers for 14-18 year olds. Karen’s time with Girlguiding began when she was a girl herself. In celebration of the publication of Girls Can Do Anything on 2nd August, award-winning author Caryl Hart discusses the lives and achievements of five women who have inspired her. This is a picture book that has the potential to open up important discussions with both girls and boys about equality and opportunity. Girls Can Do Anything would be an excellent choice for reception and KS1 classroom libraries. Hart's text is simplistic, straightforward, and poetic. Written in rhyme, it is a book about how girls can do anything from being an astronaut to a deep-sea diver and everything in-between. Pye's illustration is beautifully rendered and is the soul of the book. I really loved that the girls depicted comes in all shapes, sizes, abilities, and ethnicity – all with one thing in common – that they are all girls. But we know that Girlguiding can help change this. Girls in Girlguiding are more confident than their peers: nearly 9 in 10 of them say they like being the way they are (compared with just 6 in 10 who have never been in Girlguiding).

Which brings me to Karen Gaffney. She’s the first person with Down’s syndrome to complete a relay swim of the English Channel – or La Manche if you’re on the other side. She is also the first person with Down’s syndrome to receive a doctorate, which was awarded to her by the University of Portland for her work in raising awareness of the abilities of people with her condition. She is one of an increasing number of people that are changing perceptions of people with Down’s and for that she truly deserves her place in our gallery. Can do anything’ works on 2 levels. It’s the huge variety of activities girls can do with us week in and week out. And it’s the attitude we encourage in each girl – a way of thinking about themselves and the world they live in.
