I don't want to say too much about the actual story because it could only litter the review with spoilers but I will say that at least one character from the first book dies. Oh, yes... the author's pulling no punches with this one. As with most of these novels, we start with a bright, but somehow-stilted heroine, who is undergoing quite the personal upset. Then, she realizes that she has to find herself and what makes her happy. Enter the small, charming, seaside town and a conglomeration of quirky, fantastical characters. Polly’s ever-constant baking was also given much detail and constantly left you craving delicious breads. After one particularly tasty sounding chapter I became determined to also become a master bread maker. Long story short, I failed miserably. Bread is FAR harder to bake than Polly makes it sound like just so you know! I didn’t actually attempt any of the recipes included in the story (Cheese Straws, Sweetcorn Fritters, Cinnamon Rolls, Focaccia, and my favorite: Shortbread) but I’m determined to try again. Someday.More importantly, her treats begin to draw the attention of the locals. It isn’t long before Polly realizes that the work of her hands is actually a boon to her community, the sort of boon the locals have been looking for to add a spark to their lives. In this novel, I enjoyed getting to know Polly who at the age of thirty-something has to find a new career when the graphic design business she started with her boyfriend goes bankrupt. With so few options at her disposal and rent being so expensive in town, she decides to take residence in a small beach town that seems to be inhabited by folks that are set in their ways. I don’t know how I’ve failed to mention the best part of the story this far into my review! When Polly moves to Polbearne she unintentionally takes on a new pet which she names Neil. Neil, the puffin. You know about food: what should a pregnant woman be eating? To make her glow. I want one of those hot, glowing pregnant wives with utterly gigantic breasts.

En definitiva, la autora nos regala una lectura amena con personajes pintorescos y entrañables, no tiene grandes pretensiones más que entretener y hacer pasar un buen momento al lector, mezclando romance, humor y algún que otro drama. I rarely read Christmas themed books at any time of the year, yet as soon as I saw this one I knew it would come home from the library with me. It is just the thing for those times you want something light and feel good to read. And I was not disappointed. Even though at times things seem a bit over the top, I was happy to go along with it. It was easy to be drawn into the stories and problems of these characters. Afgelopen week heb ik me ondergedompeld in winterse sferen, omdat ‘Winter in de kleine bakkerij’ al beschikbaar was als e-book! Nadat ik zo genoten had van de eerdere avonturen van Polly, wilde ik geen dag langer wachten om het slotdeel van deze fijne trilogie te lezen! Ik vermijd ze altijd zo veel mogelijk, maar omdat dit het derde deel is, is het onvermijdelijk dat hier een paar kleine spoilers over de vorige boeken in staan. 🙃 And there is many a challenge for Polly to face, this including the demons of her past that she worked so hard to escape and the manner in which her relationship with her gorgeous boyfriend keeps evolving.

Polly Waterford is the protagonist of these books. Her life begins when she moves into a dilapidated flat situated over a former bakery. Or rather, this is where her life seemingly ends. Polly once had everything, this including a notable business and a great boyfriend. Throughout the run of the Little Beach Street Bakery series, Polly meets people that are hurting. She finds that her bread has the power to add warmth and life to some of these bruised hearts. She also learns over time that the best way to overcome her own hurt is to commiserate with the hurting members of her community.

I think the biggest reason that I didn't like or finish this the first time and why I gave this 2 stars now is that I got exhausted by the character of Polly. She just seemed fixated on moving on from her long-term boyfriend and instead of baking (there is that) we just focused on her romances with two men. And one of those men was inappropriate so I ended up disliking him for the rest of the book. I also thought the book was super short-sighted with regards to the slowly dying village deciding it didn't want a bridge into it. There are near misses by people throughout the book dealing with almost being washed away trying to get there so it made zero sense to me that this was a thing to debate. Polly is a firm favourite of mine, I loved her character and her personality since the first book so it was wonderful to be reunited with her as she continued her journey and her life on Mount Polbearne. But with a turn of events and other issues popping up, I really felt for Polly as she faced all of this. I really really rooted for Polly, and I was absolutely gripped to the story wanting to know what would happen next and how Polly would cope with everything. I REALLY want to talk about all the events but I’m desperate not to spoil anything, but there is lots of love, friendship, emotion, obstacles, and lots of bread too! Polly was a realistic character: full of flaws, yet incredibly likeable and relatable. The rest of the characters reflected the town from where they came; unique, whimsical, and almost fairy tale in their quality.
