About this deal

You have to take the books on their own merit now and you can’t treat Red Winter like Jack’s next assignment after Patriot Games. This American part of the book is further split between different perspectives, with the reader seeing events from the eyes of both the Stasi operative and the FBI agent hunting them. Ysabel Kashani is introduced in “Under Fire” and is an important character in “Commander in Chief” as well.

Tom Clancy Red Winter by Marc Cameron: 9780593422755

From the moment that Ryan and Foley cross through Checkpoint Charlie it is a story of spy versus spy where mistakes lead to death. It was unique when it was released, especially how technology, command-and-control systems, and political decisions intertwine.

However, the plan gets even more complicated when an experimental US military aircraft crashes down in the Nevada desert, right in front of an undercover Stasi agent. The franchise began with Clancy's novel Rainbow Six, which was adapted into a series of tactical first-person shooter video games. Into this comes a potential defector from Communist East Germany (the DDR), a traitor somewhere in American intelligence inside West Germany, an F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter crashing in the Nevada desert, and a still-green CIA analyst named Jack Ryan. Several of Clancy’s novels have become successful Hollywood movies and his ghost recon series books have been remade into a popular first person shooter video game.

TOM CLANCY RED WINTER | Kirkus Reviews

In this superior franchise entry, Cameron (Field of Fire) delivers plenty of action along with the spycraft and weapons details that Tom Clancy fans have always loved. These stars include Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Alec Baldwin have all received critical acclaim for their staring roles in Clancy’s movies. Red Winter captures the paranoia of the '80s Cold War well and, given how long it's been since we've seen Jack as such a young CIA recruit, there's a certain freshness to it, as well. There is also an excellent look at the traitor with the CIA and their complex position and their reasons for betraying their country are an excellent part of the plot.Domingo " Ding" Chavez: born and raised in Los Angeles, Chavez enlisted in the United States Army to escape street life. He was born in an Irish-American family as Thomas Leo Clancy Jr in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1947, during the pre-Cold War times, so it’s not a big surprise that most of his novels are spy thrillers. A character decoding encrypted messages explicitly refers to the date as May 2010, but this must be seen as a contradiction in the Jack Ryan continuity as Ed Kealty is a one term president (2005–2008).

The book starts off with a defection at a McDonald's and immediately dives into the Ryan family earlier than we have met them before. Early in his career, he served as a uniformed police officer, mounted (horse patrol) officer, SWAT officer, and detective. A deep cover East German operative tasked with surveillance of the nearby airfields is one of the first to the scene, absconding with a piece of the radar shielding technology that may turn the war from cold to hot.The most valuable piece on the board is an apparent Stasi source embedded deep within the CIA, providing invaluable information to the East Germany intelligence agency. The sequences set in Germany are also very intriguing, especially as Cameron provides some excellent descriptions of tradecraft and the various counter plays by the spies, as both sides battle it out for espionage supremacy.
